American College Wins a Façade of the Year Award
On 14 November 2019, the American College of Sofia won first prize in the category “Renovation of Historic Buildings” at the 17th edition of Baumit’s Façade of the Year Competition. The award was bestowed to recognize high achievements in the reconstruction, overhaul, renovation and extension of an existing building at the American College of Sofia.
The project was implemented in the period 2016-2018. It has been the first major project for reconstruction and extension of the American College since its inauguration at the beginning of the 20th century. It was completed thanks to America for Bulgaria Foundation which provided nearly 80% of the total value. The remaining part of the sum was raised with the assistance of ASHA Programme (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) of the American Association for International Development USAID and other private and institutional donors.
The purpose of the competition is to focus public attention on architects’ views of combining shapes, structures and volumes, and harmoniously integrating a given façade into the surrounding environment. The winning companies were determined by a professional jury comprising esteemed representatives of the construction sector.
The award was presented by Architect Nikolay Barovski, Acting Chairman of the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria to the Project Designer Architect Dimcho Tilev (Tilev Architects OOD), the General Contractor Geostroy AD and the Investor American College of Sofia.
