Project completed in 2015
Description of the project:
The existing tailings pond of Aurubis Bulgaria AD has been used to deposit the by-product fayalite formed during the flotation processing of waste slags.
Geotechmin OOD together with Geostroy AD executed Stage 3 of the project Expansion of the Fayalite Tailings Pond including overbuilding of the main dam wall to level 794 m and construction of all systems and elements ensuring the proper functioning of the facility.
The newly built section of the dam wall is 3 m high and the dam crest is 6 m wide: these enlarged dimensions have formed the final contour of the Fayalite Tailings Pond.
The following construction and assembly works were executed: backfill works, protective reinforced concrete handrails along the dam crest, a drainage system, HDPE geomembrane and a concrete anchor trench, reconstruction and relocation of the existing tailing disposal pipeline and making a new pipeline thereof, a spray irrigation system, a floating pump station, reconstruction of the power supply system, on-site lighting and automated control system, relocation of the fence and site landscaping; installation of a monitoring and measuring system; grassing and reclamation of the dam slopes.
In addition, repair works on the existing service roads were performed. New access roads were built as well as a service pathway along the dam crest and the berm.
