Geostroy begins construction on a landmark project in Sofia

April 2025

Geostroy AD, as part of Sofia – Stamboliyski 2023 Consortium, commenced construction and assembly works on the rehabilitation of Aleksandar Stamboliyski Boulevard in Sofia. The other partners in the consortium are Galchev Engineering OOD, Power Smart OOD, and Transremontstroy EAD.

The project was launched with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony attended by Mr Ivan Vassilev, Sofia’s Deputy Mayor for Finance and Healthcare; Mr Nikola Lyutov, Acting Deputy Mayor for Public Works; Mr Dimitar Petrov, Mayor of Krasna Polyana Residential District; and representatives of the project’s contractors.

The project includes the reconstruction of 3.4 km of tram tracks, as well as the repair of the road lanes and sidewalks on Aleksandar Stamboliyski Boulevard between Konstantin Velichkov Boulevard and Zapadna Street. It also envisages replacing the existing overhead catenary network with a new one, installing new poles, and rehabilitating the service lanes along the boulevard.

‘The project will be completed on time and to a high standard. It is currently divided into five main temporary traffic arrangement phases, which will be implemented during construction. Once each phase is completed, we will proceed to the next to ensure the smooth flow of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic,’ commented Mr Lyubomir Galchev, a representative of the consortium. He added that the biggest challenges in the project will relate to the public utility infrastructure.

‘The project is large-scale and highly complex. Its main focus is the repair of the tram line – 3.4 km of single-track reconstruction,’ explained Deputy Mayor Nikola Lyutov. He added that new tram stops will also be installed to improve passenger comfort.
