Design and construction of a road overpass between Belozem and Orizovo Railway Stations

MBO-Engineering Consortium comprising Geostroy AD and PIMK OOD has been carrying out the design and construction of a new road overpass at km 39+092, located between Belozem and Orizovo Railway Stations under the project Rehabilitation of Plovdiv-Burgas Railway Line, Phase 2 – Stage II. The project is funded by the EU Cohesion Fund through the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027, with additional financing from the state budget.

The contract works will be completed in three stages:

Stage 1 covers the design work and preparation of documents for obtaining a building permit. The Detailed Design will be developed based on the approved Technical Design, with specific solutions provided in sufficient detail to enable the full execution of all construction and assembly works, including delivery and installation.

The scope also includes the design of all crossings, road links, and other road infrastructure required to provide access to properties, streets, and/or roads, in accordance with the Preliminary Design and the Detailed Site Development Plan.

Stage 2 includes the following construction and assembly works:

  • construction of the foundations for piers and columns, and construction of the piers and columns themselves
  • formation of embankments
  • installation of bridge bearings
  • installation of the road superstructure
  • construction of road pavements and road safety facilities

This stage also envisages renovation of the existing railway infrastructure, including the overhead catenary, signalling and lighting systems.

All works on the road overpass will be carried out while the railway line remains in operation.

Stage 3 involves obtaining a permit for use.

The total time for completing the works under the contract shall not exceed 370 calendar days. This does not represent one continuous, uninterrupted period, but rather the sum of the deadlines for each stage of the works.

The Plovdiv-Burgas railway line, a top priority in the national railway system, is set for significant design upgrades and modernisation. These improvements will enhance service quality and reduce transportation costs for both passengers and freight. The construction of two-level crossings along the route will increase safety. With higher speeds and better services, the upgraded railway line will boost the competitiveness of rail transport compared to other modes.
